Burgerlicious diet-deal-breaker.

5 Jul

This is the story of the delicious-like-Angus-burger-I-once-ate-atRestaurang-Babar-in-Gothenburg; and I almost went to heaven.  In 2010 it was so good I went back to the restaurant two years later and ordered the same dish (at least I think so; last time the check only stated ‘burger’, this time it was called ‘Babar Cajun burger’).

Last time around it nearly killed me; I was bedridden for several hours after eating it, but it was totally worth it.
The same didn’t happen this time, but there was no room for desert.
The presentation was not all that, but the flavors in my mouth can only be described as YUMYUMYUM!!! Burger; juicy, pickles; great choice, fries; perfectly fried for my picky-fry-tastebuds, dressing; dressing-licious, salad; fresh, dip; the best part.

So if in Gothenburg and you crave for a juicy tasteful burger or a perfectly fried fry (IMO very hard to find); go to Restaurang Babar (located @ Avenyn; opposite Scandic Rubinen hotel). From the looks of it it the restaurant doesn’t look like it has one of the best burgers known to mankind; but let it surprise you.

My rating: 5/6
…I would go back next time as well if in mood for a burger, because I know this one doesn’t disappoint. Although I probably won’t go back next time, because by then  it will be time to move on.

Kjøkken Og Bar – R: 4/6

24 Jun

Seems like all I’m doing these days is eat and eat and eat when I look at my blog. 😐
I’ve been to Kjøkken og Bar @ Møllergata/Youngstorget in Oslo before and had some average meals, so was (a bit) surprised to find their chicken burger so good (meaning better than average I guess). Me ad my feta-craving-friend-Inga asked for feta and it was a successful combination!

…What I wanted when I ordered it. The feta was a nice touch, and should be implemented on the menu by the chef. The spot is great for a day out in the sun, so maybe that added to my rating. The draw-back was one “chewy” part of the chicken, and no flavor in the chicken.

Lunch @ Cafe Con Bar

5 Jun

I often come here, mostly for the club sandwich or chicken burger. Its intimate indoor setting is good for coffee/wine dates and in the summer they have an extensive outdoor sitting area. It can be difficult to get a seat indoors during the colder months as the place is fairly popular. This time I had a bacon omelette. Not the best I’ve tasted; bland and boring. Will not betray the chicken my next time here.

My rating:2/6 (the iced latte was great!)

Another day, another burger

30 Mar

Another day, another burger. I guess I’m not on a diet at the moment.  The dinner menu looks more tempting than the lunch menu @ Kjøkken & Bar. The place can get crowded, but most times I see people enjoying drinks here. The place is modern, and the staff professional. I still don’t like potatoe wedges. I don’t know where the salad had hidden, or maybe it was the tomatoe on top. The herb mayo was not great. I don’t like to taste the mayonaisse in food containing it, but I guess that is my problem I ended up pouring salt & pepper all over the dressing and the chicken burger (which was good, but tasted plain chicken). If you like well prepared fresh food, but not a lot of flavor I guess this is as good as it gets 🙂

Dinner @ Jacob Aall

30 Mar

This week me and my friend Inga enjoyed burgers @ Jacob Aall (Majorstua). The drink menu was appealing, but I can’t have alcohol during the week so that will have to be a different post. I’m more of a chicken person, so maybe I should have gone for the chicken burger which looked very good both on paper and on the plate. Instead I had the Jacob Aall hamburger was juicy and well seasoned, although not spicy.

The potatoe wedges are not my favorite, but I liked the skins. The aioli was okay; too much mayo and too little garlic. I can’t make it myself so I shouldn’t complain. It disappeared during the meal.
We had our own little corner, and I think I will go back for  lunch menu (Salame Picante sandwich).

Hard Rock Cafe – over priced

18 Mar

Hard Rock Cafe in Karl Johan is ridiculously over priced, just so you know. The portions are GRANDE, but I’d rather pay less for less.

There is nothing decent on this menu under 150 NOK! If you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were at a gourmet place by looking at the prices. Going here when I was on the border to broke was a really bad idea. There. The food is mostly interesting.

My Honey Sitrus Grilled Chicken Salad (192 NOK)
My rating: 3/6 (would have been better without the blue cheese crumbles)

Hard Rock Nachos (139 NOK) pay extra for meat

T.G.I.Friday’s is better for a slim wallet.

Koh Samui restaurants

17 Mar

Koh Samui has been chosen as #10 Food & Wine destination in Asia in 2011 by TripAdvisors’ travelers.

Source

While I haven’t been anywhere else in Asia (if you don’t count Cyprus to be part of Asia, and you probably don’t), I definitely understand why Koh Samui is holding this spot. The food was terrific! Even when dining at the most questionable restaurants with the menu’s coming apart and dead flies in the rice (only happened once, and was actually quite disgusting) the Thai food served was delicious!

Below is a list of restaurants we ate at (excluding the highly overrated Spirit House):

Bo Phut restaurants

Massaman Curry @ The Pier
When in Norway I never get potatoes with my massaman orders, but it was definitely a nice touch. The mildest portion of massaman I had in Koh Samui.
My rating 3/6

Panang Curry @ Enjoy Restaurant & Hotel
The only meal I didn’t write any notes about… I remember eating it all, drinking three bottles of water to be able to get up from my chair and move, and then going home and passing out.
My rating: 4/6

Beef appetizer @ Enjoy Restaurant & Hotel
Tasteful, but a bit hard to chew. Quite heavy meal in itself. Gave me new ideas for tapas nights.
My rating: 3/6

Yellow Curry noodle @ The Smile House
We decided to end our meal at the restaurant we had our first Koh Samui dinner. It was very tasteful, delicious, and HOT! I tried so hard to get through the entire meal, but it wasn’t possible. For the taste and how the meal is put together I would want to rate this six, but it was just too spicy.
My rating: 5/6

 Panang Curry @ The Pier
Once more with feeling.  Best panang I had. How could I not know about Panang Curry before coming here? Now all I can think about is Panang Curry. My rating: 6/6

Chaweng restaurants

Grill Lobster @ The Page, The Library hotel
The most expensive meal bought at a restaurant in Koh Samui. 1650 BHT to be exact. Lobster with garlic.
Thomas’ rating: 5/6

Goong Pad Normai @ Poppies
Thomas’ rating: 5/6

Kao Soi @ Poppies
Northern noodles with chicken and yellow curry. I love noodles. I love chicken. I love yellow curry. Exciting, and very tasteful. Maybe my best meal in Koh Samui!
My rating: 6/6

Massaman curry @ Ivory restaurant
So this is what Thai fast-food looks like. Only it wasn’t served fast at all. The most boring meal any of us had while in Koh Samui.
My rating: 3/6 (and I’m being nice)

Massaman Curry @ 56
OK, I am not impressing myself with being adventurous with the curry options, but I can’t help that this dish is as good as it is. Served with potatoes, a bit different than what this dish regularly tastes like. It was a real shame I couldn’t have it all. I wish I could wrap up the chef in a bag and bring him here to cook for me.
My rating: 5/6

Green curry @  Smile House
The place where we started our Koh Samui food romance. I wrote “heavenly” and “strong” in my travel diary.
My rating: 5/6

Lamai restaurants

Green Curry @ Coast restaurant, Lamai Wanta beach resort
The meal was mediocre, maybe not as fresh as other places, but this is a meal you have on the go (restaurant set on the beach). This is where I was served rice-with-insect, but what really drew the score down to a three was the lack of chicken in the soup. I don’t mind the bugs as long as they’re fried (or steamed)… My rating: 3/6

Tom Yam Kai @ Catcaxtoo Bar & Grill
I wanted to try something different, and got it. This meal was great for breakfast; light, warm, and tasty . It doesn’t look so inviting in the bowl (and some stuff was galantly picked out), but the lime juice is such a delicious base. My rating: 3/6
